Lesson 1B Getting Buzzy

Teacher Note: In Lesson 1A, students create the flower bowls for Lesson 1B. For Lesson 1A, add about an inch of
cornmeal with different food coloring (or mica powder) within each bowl to represent pollen. Each bowl should have a different color.

This lesson works best when flowers are in bloom so students can observe pollination.

  • Apple sliced in half
  • Black chenille sticks (craft pipe cleaners) — 3 per student
  • Black paper strips or black ribbon for legs
  • Cornmeal
  • Food coloring, mica powder, or tempera paint in 5 colors for cornmeal
  • Paper towel rolls — these will be cut in half and one half will go to each student.
  • Construction paper (yellow and black)
  • Cut strips of paper and pieces of chenille sticks for the bee legs. Strips should be the width of 8 ½ x 11 construction paper. (You’ll be giving 3 paper or ribbon legs to half of the students and 3 chenille stick legs to the other half, or you can have all students do the activity with both types of legs.
  • Tape, glue, or paperclips (for holding the parts of the bee's body together) 
  • Scissors
  • Optional: drawn or printed beehive on brown paper
  • Optional: create different bodies of bees with
    • foil
    • plastic wrap
    • cloth
    • faux fur
    • cardboard
    • yarn (can be fluffed up)
    • additional chenille sticks
