Hands-on and inquiry based aquatic investigation is the "hook". Discover Nature School's Nature Unhooked program is our middle school unit for teaching outdoors. This aquatics teacher course will cover a variety of engaging activities and suitable project based learning concepts for the Southwest Missouri region. All activities are aligned to the current state standards and Next Generation Science Standards. All DNS curriculum and suitable support materials will be provided to the participants. Available field experience funding to go along with the course will be covered.

An outdoor classroom is just as valuable as any learning space inside the school building if used correctly. Join Jeff Cantrell, Conservation Educator as he walks through the basics and set up of a couple of learning stations supporting Discover Nature Schools (DNS) curriculum, Nature Unleashed. The training will cover Nature Unleashed activities suitable for a glade garden, butterfly area and tree id trail. Primary starter information will include the grant's funding for learning stations, suitable plants for a schoolyard and some student entry ideas for science notebook instruction.

Missouri's waters move through living and nonliving systems and binds them together in a complex web of life.  This is a hands-on educator course suitable for homeschool parents, youth leaders and teachers.  We will be in the nature center's classroom and outside!   It's a day of fun learning.  Project WET gives us field tested activities for formal and non-formal educators of children from K through high school.

We will investigate Missouri's fishless pond life, a pollinator's safari, birds in the canopy and our community's wild mammals - all using the DNS activities.  This class will be hands-on, inquiry based; the setting will be both outdoors and inside.  We will reference the Nature Unleashed (Discover Nature Schools curriculum) throughout the course and cover field experiences and funding available to schools utilizing DNS materials and training.

Educators will be trained in the following areas:

  • Equipment, casting, and proper fish handling for release
  • How to Tie a Knot and Bait a Hook
  • Five Common Missouri Fishes - their Anatomy, Habitat, and Life Cycle
  • Fishing with Lures and Fishing Regulations

Upon completion of the training, schools will be eligible for fishing equipment in order to teach the lessons to their students.
