Nature Unleashed includes a student book, science notebook, and teacher guide to help elementary students learn about Missouri’s ponds, forests and prairies.
Walk around the schoolyard to determine best ways to use and improve their outdoor space for learning.
This course will show you how to incorporate STEM concepts into your classroom by using hands on experiential learning techniques, going outside and discovering nature. We will be exploring learning opportunities in school yard habitats. Learn more about the Discover Nature Schools Curriculum and Grant programs. This workshop is designed for Teachers of grades 3rd through 6th levels.
The Discover Nature Schools program, Nature Unleashed, is a program designed to allow elementary students hands-on interactions and understanding of Missouri habitats, food webs, predator/prey relationships, and adaptations. Not only does the program meet the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Missouri Learning Standards, but there are also big benefits for students. A recent study of the program shows that Nature Unleashed increased the amount of time students spent in activities and field experiences outside the classroom.
Participants will explore the MDC Discover Nature Schools 3rd – 8th grade curriculum units through interactive field experiences within common Ozark ecosystems such as watershed activities and water quality testing during a kayak trip on the Jack’s Fork and conducting ecosystem studies at Twin Pines Conservation Area. Educators will participate in lessons and create their own interactive field experience for their school classroom for the upcoming year. High School teachers are welcome to attend and create modifications to implement into their curriculum.
An outdoor classroom is just as valuable as any learning space inside the school building if used correctly. Join Jeff Cantrell, Conservation Educator as he walks through the basics and set up of a couple of learning stations supporting Discover Nature Schools (DNS) curriculum, Nature Unleashed. The training will cover Nature Unleashed activities suitable for a glade garden, butterfly area and tree id trail. Primary starter information will include the grant's funding for learning stations, suitable plants for a schoolyard and some student entry ideas for science notebook instruction.
Working with the teachers to show them how to use the schoolyard for outdoor learning for their Mysci curriclum while incoporating parts of the DNS Nature Unleashed units.
Nature Unleashed is the grade 3-5 level ecology unit in the Discover Nature Schools (DNS) series from the Missouri Department of Conservation. Emphasis of this unit is on student-centered and collaborative investigations of ecosystem components, cycles of matter and energy transfer, interdependent relationships, and human impacts.
