Nature Unhooked provides educators instruction for teaching students about Missouri's aquatic ecosystems, food webs, fishing, macro invertebrate collection and more. A teacher guide with detailed lesson plans aligned to the Missouri Learning Standards, a student book, and a student science notebook will be provided at no cost.
Hands-on and inquiry based aquatic investigation is the "hook". Discover Nature School's Nature Unhooked program is our middle school unit for teaching outdoors. This aquatics teacher course will cover a variety of engaging activities and suitable project based learning concepts for the Saint Louis Missouri region. All activities are aligned to the current state standards and Next Generation Science Standards. All DNS curriculum and suitable support materials will be provided to the participants. Available field experience funding to go along with the course will be covered.
This will be a hybrid DNS Unhooked training for Greenville teacher(s). This will be comprised of 5 hours of hands on activities and 1 hour of grant and application explanation.
Participants will explore the MDC Discover Nature Schools Kindergarten – 12th grade curriculum units through interactive field experiences within common Southeast ecosystems such as biodiversity studies and water quality testing during a kayak trip on a local river, as well as conducting ecosystem studies at Duck Creek Conservation Area. Educators will participate in lessons and create their own interactive field experience for their school classroom for the upcoming year.

The Discover Nature Schools, Nature Unhooked, is a program for 6th-8th grade teachers. This hands-on, inquiry-based teacher workshop will be an engaging foundation for the Nature Unhooked lessons. The materials are aligned to the Missouri Learning Standards and the Next Generation Science Standards. We will discover the local aquatic life and their importance to people and natural communities.
The program includes the follow items at no charge for Missouri Teachers:
Emphasis of this unit is on student-centered and collaborative investigations of the properties of water, water cycle, biotic energy flow, biodiversity, and human impacts on aquatic ecosystems. A Project Based Learning component is also included in this unit. This workshop will cover lessons and activities from the unit as well as an outdoor, experiential approach to student learning.
