Nature Unfolds includes a student book titled See How the Turkey Grows, a science notebook, and teacher guide. Together they help K-2 students learn about life cycles, basic needs of plants and animals, and seasons and weather.

The Discover Nature Schools (DNS) program provides high quality science units designed to meet the needs of teachers while preparing Missouri's students to become life-long conservationists through hands-on experiences in nature. During this one-day workshop, teachers will learn how to be successful with the DNS unit appropriate to their grade level (Pre-K, K-2, 3-5, 6-8 or 9-12). This workshop fulfills the training requirement for teachers to participate in the DNS grant program for funding exploration equipment, outdoor classroom materials, and transportation for field experiences.

The Discover Nature Schools (DNS) program provides new and interesting curriculum that incorporates hands-on outdoor activities featuring Missouri ecosystems. Each unit has been aligned with the Missouri Learning Standards and Next Generation Science Standards. Teaching students outside has been shown to help improve test scores and help with behavior issues. Each unit comes with excellent teacher and student guides. These materials are free to public, private, or homeschool educators.

Festus Elementary School has agreed to host a teacher professional development workshop on the Discover Nature – Schools instructional unit, Nature Unfolds. The workshop will be led by Sam Faith, Education Consultant for the Missouri Department of Conservation, in two sessions, from 3:30 to 6:30 pm on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons, November 8th and 9th. Completion of this training (both three-hour sessions) qualifies participants to apply for the Nature Unfolds grant offered by MDC to support schools that implement the instructional unit.

The Missouri Department of Conservation's Discover Nature Schools (DNS) program includes engaging curriculum that involves hands-on outdoor learning of Missouri's ecosystems.  Aligned to both the Missouri Learning Standards and Next Generation Science Standards, units are designed to meet teachers' curricular goals and objectives.

The Discover Nature Schools program, Nature Unfolds, is a program designed for students to learn about seasons, weather, life cycles, and parent/offspring relationships. Not only does the program meet the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Missouri Learning Standards, but there are also big benefits for students. Learning outdoors improves student physical and mental health and reduces attention-deficit problems. 

The program includes the follow items:

Discover Nature Schools (DNS) is a hands-on science/conservation education program for K-12 Students. This workshop will cover the Nature Unfolds and Nature Unleashed Instructional Unit for grades K-2 and 3-5, including use of the teacher guide, science notebooks and the colorful, engaging student book entitled See How The Turkey Grows.  investigations. Procedures for participation in the DNS grant program that provides funding for science equipment, outdoor classrooms and field experiences related to this unit will also be covered.

This workshop will prepare educators to teach the hands-on, Missouri Learning Standards unit which includes a field tested teacher guide, science notebooks for each student, and classroom copies of the book: See How the Turkey Grows. The grant funding associated with this program will provide at least one field trip and supply classroom materials to teach the unit.

The Discover Nature Schools (DNS) program provides teachers in Missouri with no-cost curriculum units that incorporate hands-on outdoor activities featuring Missouri wildlife and habitats. Each unit has been aligned with the most recent Missouri Learning Standards and Next Generation Science Standards and includes a field-tested teacher guide, as well as student books and science notebooks for each student. Grant funding is available to purchase classroom supplies and pay for field trip transportation.
