This course will show you how to incorporate STEM concepts into your classroom by using hands on experiential learning techniques, going outside and discovering nature. We will be exploring learning opportunities in school yard habitats. Learn more about the Discover Nature Schools Curriculum and Grant programs. This workshop is designed for Teachers of grades 3rd through 6th levels.
This workshop is for Springfield Schools Outdoor Awareness teachers. The workshop will included fire safety training from the Springfield Fire Department and outdoor cooking procedures, methods, safety, and recipes from MDC staff. The location of the training will be at one of the SPS middle schools -TBA
This is a virtual professional development workshop. It consists of a 90 minute presentation to introduce important facets of the DNS Nature Revealed unit: Organization of the teacher guide including cross-referenced appendices, best practices in leading nature experiences in early childhood, connections to learning goals, seasonal arrangement of experiences, construction and use of developmentally appropriate science notebooks, and prep and use of manipulatives including puzzles and story board characters.
This training is for public school teachers seeking HED teacher certification. Please have approval from your building administrator to take the training.
This workshop is cooperative between the Missouri Dept. of Conservation and Missouri State Discover Nature Teacher program. The Discover Nature Schools program, Nature Unfolds, is a program designed for students to learn about seasons, weather, life cycles, and parent/offspring relationships. Not only does the program meet the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Missouri Learning Standards, but there are also big benefits for students. Learning outdoors improves student physical and mental health and reduces attention-deficit problems.
Nature Unhooked (6th-8th) Teacher Training Description: The Discover Nature Schools (DNS) program, Nature Unhooked, is a curriculum of 6 units designed for 6th-8th grade students with hands-on, outdoor learning that focuses on water properties and Missouri aquatic ecosystems including weathering and erosion, food chains, organism roles and interactions, as well as macroinvertebrate sampling, water quality testing, and water pollution engineering.
The Discover Nature Schools (DNS) program, Nature Unleashed, is a curriculum of 8 units designed for 3rd-5th grade students to promote understanding of Missouri habitats by exploring food chains and the roles of producers and consumers as well as specialized structures and biotic and abiotic factors. The curriculum supports Missouri Learning Standards (MLS) in science, particularly life science. The hands-on, inquiry-focused lessons provide outdoor learning opportunities where students can explore their own schoolyard. Summative assessments are provided for each unit.
