Hunter Education Instructor Position Description

Position Title:

Conservation Staff Volunteer Hunter Education Instructor

Time Required:

Teach or assist with the instruction of two (2) sessions every 24 months based on their instructor certification date.

General Purpose:

Responsible for assisting the Lead Instructor as needed in conducting Hunter Education (HE) classroom and skills sessions. Possess good communication skills both oral and written. Able to teach the curriculum in a manner that effectively covers all required material, is relevant and interesting to students and keeps the class on schedule. Accept positive critiquing of teaching skills by the Lead Instructor, Outdoor Skills Specialist, Conservation Agent or other instructors. Have the ability to operate audio visual equipment such as TV/DVD players and projectors as required. Effectively and accurately checks each student’s Skills Session Qualifier Certificate, or completed student manual before checking the student as attend on the roster. Assist with all administration of testing, grading the written exam, and issuing temporary certification paperwork. Have the ability to tactfully address problems that may arise with students or other instructors. Be able to take over the class if necessary due to the absence of the Lead Instructor. Represent the Department in a positive manner at all times. Attend state & regional trainings as needed. Comply with instructions and direction as set out by the Outdoor Skills Specialist, Lead Instructor or Conservation Agent. Perform other tasks as necessary to facilitate the Hunter Education Program.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Teaches HE courses at designated location.
  • Provide your own transportation to HE courses.
  • Assist with grading of student tests and related paperwork for certifying students.
  • Maintains professionalism while positively promoting the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC).

Qualifications:

  • Public speaking skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Own transportation.
  • Complete MDC Hunter Education Course.
  • Subject to interview process, background check, mentorship, and MDC Hunter Education Instructor Certification Course.
