The Discover Nature Schools (DNS) program, Nature Unleashed, is a curriculum of 8 lessons designed for 3rd-5th grade students to promote understanding of Missouri habitats by exploring food chains and the roles of producers and consumers as well as specialized structures and biotic and abiotic factors. The curriculum supports Missouri Learning Standards (MLS) in science, particularly life science. The hands-on, inquiry-focused lessons provide outdoor learning opportunities where students can explore their own schoolyard. Summative assessments are provided for each unit.

This Discover Nature School (DNS) program Kindergarten: Bears Through the Season is designed specifically for Kindergarten students. This curriculum is aligned to all Missouri Learning Science (MLS) and Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) including the four components of Earth and Space Science, Physical Science, Life Science and Engineering and Technology Science.

This is a Hunter Education certification training for educators seeking to teach and certify students in their perspective school districts. Participants will need to be hunter education student certified and complete forms 1A and 1B prior to attending the workshop, to receive these forms email Scott.Sarantakis@mdc.mo.gov

Participants will be trained in the following areas:

-Equipment, casting, and proper fish handling

-How to Tie a Knot and bait a Hook

-Five Common Missouri Fish-Their Anatomy, Habitat, and Life Cycle

-Fishing with Lures and Fishing Regulations

Upon completion of the training schools will be eligible for fishing equipment in order to teach the lessons to their students. We will be outside for the duration of the class so please dress appropriately.

Nature Unbound is a high school level ecology unit designed to build on knowledge and concept foundations taught in basic biology. Supporting expectations from the MLS and NGSS, emphasis of this unit is on student-centered and collaborative investigations of ecosystem dynamics, cycles of matter and energy transfer, interdependent relationships, and human impact on biodiversity. This workshop will cover lessons and activities from the unit as well as an outdoor, experiential approach to student learning. All materials will be provided.

This training is for school teacher that will conducting Hunter Education in the school classroom setting. All teachers need to be student hunter education certified prior to the training. Please contact David Bruns at 314-301-1500 if you have any questions.

This is a virtual training which will use endangered species as a topic to introduce teachers to the Discover Nature Schools program.  Information about the MDC Teacher Portal will also be covered.

This will be the on-line virtual portion of the training in the Nature Revealed Pre-K unit which will be conducted using Webex Meetings.
