Nature Unhooked
Nature Unhooked includes a student book, science notebook, and teacher guide to help middle-school students learn about the role of water in an ecosystem.
Nature Unhooked is the middle school level aquatic unit of the Discover Nature Schools program and is aligned with the Missouri Learning Standards and the Next Generation Science Standards. Emphasis of this unit is on student-centered and collaborative investigations of the properties of water, water cycle, biotic energy flow, biodiversity, and human impacts on aquatic ecosystems. A Project Based Learning component is also included in this unit. This workshop will cover lessons and activities from the unit as well as an outdoor, experiential approach to student learning.
This is one option offered within a well-being professional development day for middle school faculty of the Kirkwood School District. The workshop will include tour of the exhibits at Powder Valley Conservation Nature Center, thoughtful group discussion of the health and therapeutic benefits of spending time in natural settings based on published research, and practical applications within educational settings including use of Nature Unhooked and other DNS units.
This workshop is for 6th and 7th grade Science teachers within the district.
Unhooked Certification for Fisk Elem and Holcomb Middle School
Introducing the place-based science and conservation education program. The main focus to compliment existing Neosho School District curriculum and include exciting and engaging inquiry-based activities designed to bring students outdoors and closer to nature. We will summarize the curriculum, go over field experience options in SW Missouri, cover the grant opportunities.
Nature Unhooked (6th-8th) Teacher Training Description: The Discover Nature Schools (DNS) program, Nature Unhooked, is a curriculum of 6 units designed for 6th-8th grade students with hands-on, outdoor learning that focuses on water properties and Missouri aquatic ecosystems including weathering and erosion, food chains, organism roles and interactions, as well as macroinvertebrate sampling, water quality testing, and water pollution engineering.
Dawn Johnson has used our curriculum before. Kathi Moore asked me to meet with her to teach her about grant opportunities and field experiences.
The Discover Nature Schools, Nature Unhooked, is a program for 6th-8th grade teachers. This hands-on, inquiry-based teacher workshop will be an engaging foundation for the Nature Unhooked lessons. The materials are aligned to the Missouri Learning Standards and the Next Generation Science Standards. We will discover the local aquatic life and their importance to people and natural communities.
The program includes the follow items at no charge for Missouri Teachers:

Workshop for 6th grade teaching team includes overview of DNS, Nature Unhooked Teacher Guide and student materials, use of science notebooks, planning and conducting field experiences, accessing and using the MDC Teacher Portal, and DNS grant administration process. This is a review/refresher for several registrants who are already certified in DNS Nature Unhooked
