Nature Unfolds includes a student book titled See How the Turkey Grows, a science notebook, and teacher guide. Together they help K-2 students learn about life cycles, basic needs of plants and animals, and seasons and weather.
The blueprint for an engaging naturescaped yard or a school's outdoor classroom learning station is as basic as third grade ecology. However, the rewards and the aesthetics are for all who love nature. A well designed native flower/butterfly garden at a school is a suitable stage for students to explore symbiotic, parasitic and commensal relationships in the natural world. Animal and plant adaptations are an engaging component of Nature Unleashed and an area designed for pollinators is perfect for collecting data and science note-booking.
This teacher workshop will focus on Discover Nature School (DNS) curriculums Nature Unfolds and Nature Unleashed for Kindergarten through 5th grades.
This Discover Nature School (DNS) program, Nature Unfolds, is designed for kindergarten through 2nd grade and includes 4 seasonal units that focus on seasonal changes, weather, lifecycles, and parent/offspring relationships. The curriculum supports Missouri Learning Standards (MLS) in science, particularly life science. The hands-on, inquiry-focused lessons provide outdoor learning opportunities where students can explore their own schoolyard.
Training (non-certification) for teachers in the DNS Nature Unfolds unit conducted during a bird-themed school visit/student program at the Nature Center.
The Discover Nature Schools program, Nature Unfolds, is a program designed for students to learn about seasons, weather, life cycles, and parent/offspring relationships. Not only does the program meet the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Missouri Learning Standards, but there are also big benefits for students. Learning outdoors improves student physical and mental health and reduces attention-deficit problems.
The program includes the follow items:
• full-color, illustrated student book: See How the Turkey Grows
The Discover Nature Schools (DNS) program, Nature Unleashed, is a curriculum of 8 units designed for 3rd-5th grade students to promote understanding of Missouri habitats by exploring food chains and the roles of producers and consumers as well as specialized structures and biotic and abiotic factors. The curriculum supports Missouri Learning Standards (MLS) in science, particularly life science. The hands-on, inquiry-focused lessons provide outdoor learning opportunities where students can explore their own schoolyard. Summative assessments are provided for each unit.
Part of Gifted Student Summer program, Nature Unfolds DNS training and introduced the new kindergarten unit.
Covering Field experience options for DNS (Discover Nature Schools program), Bluff Dwellers Cave, Shoal Creek Conservation Education Center, GW Carver National Monument, and Neosho National Fish Hatchery.
Covering DNS Science Notebooks:
- developing active, pursuing learners and encouraging higher level thinking skills.
