This workshop is designed for all teachers wanting to learn more about common insects in Missouri. This is a hands-on workshop designed to enhance educators’ skills in collecting and identifying insect with their students. If teachers are Discovery Nature certified it will complement the DNS curriculum and help you as an educator expand your insect knowledge!

Objectives / Activities of the Workshop

  • Learn to identify 100 common insects of Missouri
  • Learn characteristic of the common insect orders
  • Learn collection, preservation, and mounting methods
  • Distinguish common beneficial and destructive insect
  • Teachers will receive resources for use in their classrooms
  • Build sample insect kill jars
  • Collect some insects in the field
  • Come have some fun learning before school starts!

We will take a lunch break, but teachers are encouraged to bring a sack lunch. Please dress appropriately for the weather and don’t forget your insect repellent!
